About the Disaster Coordination Centre

Division Overview

The Madang Provincial Disaster & Emergency Coordination Centre serves as the lead agency for disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery across Madang Province. Under the leadership of Director Rudolph Mougallee, the centre coordinates rapid disaster responses and prepares communities to be alert on disaster calamities. With a dedicated team of 2 staff members (Director and Admin Officer), the centre works to ensure that Madang's diverse communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from natural and man-made disasters.

Safety Tips

Disaster Preparedness Tips

Flood Preparedness

Know your evacuation routes, prepare an emergency kit with essential documents, and move to higher ground when advised. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.

Cyclone Preparedness

Secure loose outdoor items, reinforce doors and windows, identify the strongest room in your home, and stock emergency supplies for at least 3 days.

Earthquake Safety

Drop, Cover, and Hold On during shaking. Move away from windows and heavy objects. After shaking stops, check for injuries and hazards before evacuating.

Landslide Awareness

Be alert during heavy rainfall, watch for signs like new cracks in ground or structures, and listen for unusual sounds. Evacuate immediately if you suspect landslide danger.

Your emergency kit should include: 3-day supply of water (4 litres per person per day), non-perishable food, first aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, personal hygiene items, copies of important documents, cash, emergency contact information, and any special needs items like medications, baby supplies, or pet food.
The Disaster Coordination Centre issues alerts through multiple channels: radio broadcasts (NBC Madang), SMS alerts to registered mobile numbers, social media updates (Facebook), community loudspeaker systems in high-risk areas, and direct communication with village leaders. We recommend following our updates for real-time information.
Evacuation centers are established based on the type and location of the disaster. Primary centers include schools, churches, and community halls. Specific locations for your area can be found in our evacuation route maps (available for download in the Resources section) or will be announced through emergency alerts when activated.
